Perhaps by now you have heard the story of Dr. Lorna M. Breen. Dr. Breen was a top emergency room doctor at a Manhattan hospital that treated many coronavirus patients. She herself contracted the virus, but had gone back to work after recuperating for about a week and a half. Because of what she described as an “onslaught of patients who were dying before they could even be taken out of ambulances” and the stress associated with the fear of reinfection, with treating her own colleagues, and with no end in sight, Dr. Breen took her own life. The coronavirus has changed almost everything we do. Sadly, an unintended consequence of Governor Pritzker’s executive order has been to require some unhappy couples to “shelter-in-place” together.
