Divorce and Family Law During the Pandemic

Perhaps by now you have heard the story of Dr. Lorna M. Breen. Dr. Breen was a top emergency room doctor at a Manhattan hospital that treated many coronavirus patients. She herself contracted the virus, but had gone back to work after recuperating for about a week and a half. Because of what she described as an “onslaught of patients who were dying before they could even be taken out of ambulances” and the stress associated with the fear of reinfection, with treating her own colleagues, and with no end in sight, Dr. Breen took her own life. If you are an essential worker, especially if you are in the medical professions, law enforcement or fire services, we want to honor you for your selfless acts of bravery. And, if you are an essential worker in need of legal services during this pandemic, we want to thank you by cutting our fees in half, and offering you remote access to our firm through social media, Zoom, email or telephone.

The coronavirus has changed almost everything we do. Sadly, an unintended consequence of Governor Pritzker’s executive order has been to require some unhappy couples to “shelter-in-place” together. At a minimum, this can add stress to already stressful relationships. At worst, this can lead to domestic violence. No one is required to remain in an abusive relationship simply because of the governor’s order.

The bottom line is that you can still litigate your divorce or family law case, even in the midst of Illinois’ “stay at home” order. We here at the law firm of Camic, Johnson, Ltd. are committed to providing you with the same level of outstanding legal services we have been providing for the last 30 years. We just need to be more creative these days in how we provide those services. Contact us to discuss your case today so we can show you how we can help, and as always, we thank you for your trust in our firm.
